eMobility
The Mobile and Wireless Communications and Technology Platform
The eMobility Platform was initiated in 2003 and publicly launched in Brussels on 18 March 2005.
Objectives
eMobility's main goal is to reinforce Europe's leadership in mobile and wireless communications and services and to master the future development of this technology, so that it best serves Europe's citizens and the European economy. eMobility aims to maintain Europe's position in the global market for mobile and wireless systems in the 2010-2015 time horizon by developing large-scale European approaches to system research and development, and to mobile services and applications in the context of digital convergence.
eMobility has the following key objectives:
- Mid- to long-term vision to maximise the benefit of mobile and wireless
communications, thus enabling economic and social advances in the EU
- Formulation of an action plan and time-table for the key developments
- Evolution of a consistent policy, spectrum and regulatory framework
The mission of eMobility is to:
- Achieve full mobile access to applications for European citizens, building on
European strength in wireless communication
- Develop the technology to provide optimal applications relying on the most
promising technologies and network resources
- Focus European R&D resources to exploit the coming business opportunities in
mobile and wireless to the benefit of the European economy, and ensuring
eInclusion especially for the new member states
Organisational structure
General Assembly
- More than 100 organisations are a member of eMobility
- The General Assembly will be formed in second half of 2005
Steering Board
- 17 industry representatives with voting rights (vendors, operators, content
providers, and other service providers)
- 2 SME representatives with voting rights - 4 representatives from research
organisations with voting rights (universities, R&D centers)
- 3 observers without voting rights (CELTIC, WWRF, user community, etc.)
- 1 observer from the CEC without voting rights

- Representatives from Alcatel, Ericsson, France Telecom, Nokia and Siemens
Expert Advisory Group

Activities (existing and planned in short-term)
- Systematic development of the strategy with a progressively growing
involvement of sector actors
- Establishment of links with related activities and sectors e.g. broadcasting,
- Active efforts to bring together national and local authorities to promote an
environment conducive to the development of the mobile and wireless
communications sector in Europe
- Refinement of the Strategic Research Agenda for research and development in
mobile and wireless systems beyond 3G
- Investigation of the legal frameworks that could be used as a basis for the
organisation of the Platform research.
Specific Deliverables (medium to long term)
- Platform to sponsor a proposal for a Specific Support Action still under
the FP6 IST programme as a bridge towards FP7.
- Establish peer-to-peer relations with Asian and American research programmes.
