Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF)
The WWRF is a global organisation, which was founded in August 2001. The Forum provides a global platform for the discussion of results and exchange of views to initiate global cooperation towards systems beyond 3G.
Members of the Forum are:
- manufacturers
- network operators/service providers
- R&D centres/universities
- small and medium-sized enterprises
Objectives
The WWRF aims to:
- identify and scope research issues relevant to future mobile and wireless
communications, including pre-regulatory impact assessments
- invite world-wide participation, open to all actors
Recent achievements
- A common vision of future mobile and wireless technologies published in the
"Book of Visions".
- Alignment of views on wireless technologies via liaisons with MITF in Japan,
the UMTS Forum in Europe, the NGMC Forum in Korea, and the FuTURE project in
China.
- Regular events with leading experts and decision-makers for exchanging
research results and presenting future scenarios and strategies.
- Proven record of creating global large-scale research cooperation and
facilitating funding.
- Consensus-building prior to standardisation and coordinated input to standards
bodies.
- White papers on leading-edge research topics like Smart antennas, Ad-hoc
networks, reconfigurability and business in the future wireless world
Current research topics
- System concepts and high-level architectures
- Requirements on future mobile and wireless systems
- The role of scenarios for applications and services
- Applications and services - Service categorization and service evolution
- Cooperative and ambient networks
- New approaches to self-organisation in networking
- Meshing and multi-hop protocols for relay-based deployment
- Wideband channel measurement and modelling
- Duplexing, resource allocation and inter-cell coordination
- Broadband frequency domain-based air interfaces
- Management and control architecture, scalability and stability of
reconfigurable systems
- Cognitive radio and management of spectrum and radio resources in
reconfigurable networks
- Business models and sustainability of reconfigurability - Requirements for
future service platform architectures
- Determining spectrum efficiency and flexible spectrum use
